Taking your pet on a holiday can be a rewarding experience, but it takes careful planning to ensure a safe and comfortable journey. With the right preparation, you can make car travel enjoyable and stress-free for both you and your furry friend. At Tallowood Boarding Lodge, we know that a little planning goes a long way in creating wonderful memories with your pet. Here are our top tips for getting road-trip-ready.
Make a list of everything your pet will need while travelling. Be sure to include a leash, harness, food, water, bowls, toys, medication, and a cozy bed or blanket. Familiar items can help your pet feel more comfortable in unfamiliar surroundings.
A pre-trip visit to the vet is a must. Ensure your pet is healthy, up to date on vaccinations, and ready for the journey.
If your pet is not accustomed to car rides, introduce them gradually with short drives. These practice trips can help ease anxiety and make the longer journey more manageable.
Schedule regular stops every two to three hours to allow your pet to stretch, drink water, and use the bathroom. These breaks will help them stay comfortable and relaxed during the trip. Try align breaks with their usual toilet routine to avoid accidents.
Avoid feeding your pet for at least two hours before hitting the road to minimise the risk of motion sickness. Offer water during your breaks to keep them hydrated.
Ensure your car is well-ventilated and maintained at a comfortable temperature. Use sunshades to block direct sunlight, and include a familiar item like a blanket or toy to make the space more inviting.
Always restrain your pet using a harness, travel crate, or pet seat belt. This ensures their safety and helps the driver stay focused.
Bring plenty of fresh water for your pet and take frequent breaks so they can stretch and explore safely. Research rest stops in advance to find pet-friendly options.
Never leave your pet unattended in the car, as temperatures can change quickly and become dangerous. Additionally, don’t let your pet stick their head out of the window—it may seem fun, but it can lead to injuries.
To make the trip smoother, consider additional items like calming sprays, their favourite toy, or a blanket with their scent. A pet first-aid kit, complete with antiseptic wipes, bandages, and a thermometer, is also a smart addition to your travel gear.
Cats often require extra care to feel at ease during travel. Here’s how to make the ride more comfortable for your feline companion:
